About This Tip Calculator

This free tip calculator works out the tip and splits the bill between any number of people. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and it shows the tip, the total and the amount each person pays. It's handy for restaurants, cafés, taxis and group outings.

Tipping in Australia is optional and less common than in some countries, because hospitality staff are paid award wages. A tip for great service is always appreciated but never required. Use this tool whenever you want to split a bill quickly and fairly.

Tipping in Australia works differently from the United States. Hospitality staff here are covered by award wages, so tips are a genuine bonus rather than part of someone's base income — leaving nothing is completely normal, and rounding up or tipping around 5 to 10 percent for great service is a kind gesture rather than an obligation.

That changes the moment you travel. In the US, 15 to 20 percent is the baseline expectation at restaurants and under-tipping is taken badly; in much of Europe a service charge is often already on the bill. This calculator lets you set any percentage, so it works for an Australian round-up, an American dinner or anywhere in between.

The bill-splitting feature is the part most people use at home: enter the total, add the tip if any, set the number of people and everyone's share appears instantly — no awkward mental arithmetic at the end of a group dinner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tipping expected in Australia?+
No. Tipping is optional because hospitality staff are paid award wages. A tip of around 10% for excellent service is a nice gesture but never required.
How do I split a bill evenly?+
Enter the total bill and the number of people, and the calculator divides the total — including any tip — equally between everyone.
Can I calculate just the tip?+
Yes. The calculator shows the tip amount separately from the total, so you can see exactly how much the tip adds.
Do you need to tip in Australia?+
No — tipping is optional. Hospitality staff are paid award wages, so not tipping is normal. Many people round up the bill or tip 5–10% for standout service.
How much should I tip in the United States?+
15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the standard expectation at sit-down restaurants, with more for exceptional service. Tipping culture there is effectively mandatory, unlike in Australia.
How does bill splitting work?+
Enter the bill total, choose a tip percentage (which can be zero) and the number of people. The calculator shows the tip, the grand total and exactly what each person owes.
